Highlights from the third ASEE Breakfast Meeting
Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, and Supported Employment is no exception. At our third Breakfast Meeting, members explored what AI can do for practitioners, where the risks lie, and how to use it wisely.
AI as a partner, not a replacement
Our guest speaker was Hector Minto, founder of Kerbcut and UK disability ambassador to the tech sector. He encouraged members to treat AI as a discussion partner for reviewing documents, analysing data, searching internal repositories or drafting text, with a person always in charge.
His advice for getting good results:
- Set the scene. Give the AI a clear role, context, sources and expectations.
- Ground it. Anchor the AI in reliable information instead of letting it guess.
- Always check. Review and verify what AI produces before using it, especially in sensitive areas such as health or finance.
Participants shared their own experiences, from reviewing emails in another language to cases where AI gave unsafe advice. These were good reminders that over-trusting AI carries real risks.
Protecting people’s data
Privacy was a major theme. Members asked how to benefit from AI while keeping client information confidential. The answer was strong data governance: know what information goes into a tool, and keep personal details out where possible. Hector explained that his new platform will accept references rather than client information, as a matter of design.
