Shaping a new series for exchanging best practices in supported employment across Europe
Supported Employment looks different in every country. Funding systems, policies and everyday practice vary widely, yet practitioners across Europe face many of the same questions. That is why ASEE launched its Breakfast Meetings: short, regular online sessions where members learn from each other.
Before fixing the format, we asked the people who will shape it. Here is what we heard.
What members told us
A space to learn from one another. Members want to hear what is happening in other countries, in both policy and practice. Sharing research and presenting national contexts helps everyone understand where Europe stands, and gives members something to showcase at home.
Policy that connects to practice. There is strong interest in EU-level developments on employment inclusion, funding trends, and how a common quality language such as the SEQF can support dialogue with policymakers and funders.
Hands-on, practical topics. Many want concrete “how-to” content: job analysis, employer engagement, working with specific groups such as young people, people with mental health conditions or migrants, and documenting outcomes in ways that work for both staff and funders.
Technology that supports the relationship. Members are curious about case management tools, AI as an assistant rather than a decision-maker, and GDPR in everyday practice.
Big questions about our field. What is customised employment, and how does it differ from supported employment, or from IPS?
How it should feel
Members were just as clear about the format:
A safe, open space where people can speak freely
– Interactive sessions with polls, breakout rooms and debate, not just presentations
– External speakers alongside member voices
– A wider circle, including national umbrella organisations, employers and other NGOs, not only ASEE members
– Real results: what members contribute should lead to visible outcomes
